Esports are not happening at the 2020 olympics.
Thomas Bach president of the International Olympic Committee participated in a esports forum and stated that esports are “contradictory to the Olympic values and cannot therefore be accepted”. Esports are a huge market, and with tens of millions of people watching some of the biggest esports events, there are many people who think that esports should become a part of the Olympics as an event.
Despite the fanbase being so large, many people don’t know what esports are.
“Esports are basically just competitive video games” explains Tyler Rocha member of the CMU League of Legends Club. “If you think about a sports team it’s that, but they’re playing video games.”
While some people want esports to appear in the Olympics, others are skeptical about the odds of this ever happening. “The international Olympic committee is pretty strict in what they will allow in.” said Kevin Fisher, Assistant Professor of Physical Education & Sport at Central Michigan University. “the Olympics seems more geared towards more traditional types of activities… But it depends on the sport”.
This in turn raises the question on whether or not esports even count as sports in the first place. “it’s certainly not a traditional sport” says Fisher.
When it comes to the debate between whether or not esports are the same as actual sports, there are two main sides of the argument. Some people say that video games don’t require enough body movement and exercise to be considered a sport, while other people say that they think that they do. “I think you need far greater mental ability for esports” says Joshua Farkas Former member of CMU League of Legends Club. “You need the dexterity to move your character to defend yourself. I think that it is in some ways more demanding than some other sports. Because people who do esports can spend 8 hours a day training, while people who play other sports like football and basketball practice a lot less than that.”
It is interesting to note that despite esports being deemed “contradictory to the Olympic values” the reason for this has nothing to do with their questionable status as a sport, but rather because they were deemed too violent. “We cannot have in the Olympic program a game which is promoting violence” said Bach. Certain people like Farkas believe that this is a somewhat flimsy argument however, especially since sports such as fencing are included. “Fencing is in the Olympics, and it is about simulating a stabbing duel to the death”.
This argument has raised more controversy. While many video games featured in esports involve killing, there are many others that do not. The popular esport game Rocket League is based on the real-life sport of soccer (which is an Olympic event already) but with the twist of playing with rocket powered cars.
While esports have already been decided to be left out of the 2020 Olympics, there are already discussions about if they could appear in the 2024 games. Only time will tell if esports will ever make it to the Olympics.
